These are the locations in which we have decided to plan to have our music video, we got these images from 'Google Maps' and print screened the shots.

Enquiry two to the Car Park

Enquiry one to the Car Park

What Amy wrote to the Car park in Bexleyheath:

'Me and three of my classmates from Welling School Sixth Form, thought it would be nice to film part of our A-level music video in a car park. We thought that the car park in Royal Oak Road North road , Bexleyheath , DA6 7HG, would be a perfect location for this. We were advised to request permission to film there, rather than just turn up. We are happy to pay for a car park space, as we will be using a car in the video also. We hope to hear back, about whether or not we will be able to do this.'

Production Journal

In today's lesson, our group decided to feed back to each other what we had each done in the half term for the project, two of our members also started to write enquiries to car parks to ask permission.

Branding and a possible intertextual reference.

'Studded Roses' - False Eyelashes.

We decided that creating a product that represented the target audience would be mainly something into with cosmetic items, due to the mainly female audience. We felt that false eyelashes would be a good way of representing the band, they could also be used as an intertextual reference to our group in the music video aswell, maybe a shot of one of the girls getting ready and this product being on the dressing table, allowing that advertisement for them and the girl group.

Creating the logo for the band

The Finished Logo...

I feel that the typography of our logo is simple but easy to understand as the text represents the bands name through image. E.g, the rose represented the roses and the studs along the text representing the studded roses, which could also show the groups main ideology of and main topic of the songs, 'love', which is a connotation of the rose.

The process...
When creating the logo, we decided to keep the logo in which we created on our moodboard, however we felt that we needed to change the design just slightly. The way in which we decided to do this was to add small studs to the text as the typography to represent the studs within the text.

Production Journal

During this week we completed all of our 100 shots for our storyboard for the music video, we also wrote out all the plans for the music video, including: location, costume and roles. We also created a questionnaire with questions that included our different thoughts about the video in which we wanted to have feedback for.

Our audience questionnaire for the video

We are making a music video for Mis-Teeq's scandalous. The idea of our video is 'the chase ' where viewers will see the four members of our girl group 'Studded Roses' dominating the males. The locations for our video include streets, a car park, car and a homemade setting. We have also decided to include a dark edge to the video to make it somewhat different from the typical pop/r'n'b music videos of nowadays.

1. Do you believe the locations we have chosen for our music video are good? Whether yes or no, explain you answer.

2. What do you feel about the theme of our video, ‘the chase’?

3. Do you feel the song we have chosen is suitable for this theme?

☐Yes ☐No (explain)

4. Our target audience is people between the ages of 15-30 (particularly females). Do you think our music video will interest them?

☐Yes ☐No

5. We have decided to include a dark edge to our music video. Would this appeal to you? Please explain your answer.

6. Do you feel there are any common themes in girl band’s videos (particularly that of the pop/r’n’b genre)?

7. What type of costume do you think would be suitable for this music video?

8. Is there anything you believe we should be wary of when shooting our video?

9. What would you like to see in a music video of this genre?

10. Do you have any other ideas as to other things we can include within our video?

Rihanna Poster analysis

When analysing Rihanna's, Russian Roulette poster to advertise the new single, I started off by looking at the colours used within the poster, the dark, black and red connotes the idea of danger and death, as well as explaing the title of the song a little more, 'Russian Roulette', the idea of death. The red text references to the idea of blood, as the typography used also has a drip, being a connotation of blood. The 'R' used for Rihanna in which is silver also connotes a sharp object and death and danger which links to the album and the artists ideology of 'Good girl gone bad'.

The image used of Rihanna in this poster shows her dominate, power side of her ideology which in her music career. The wire around her body connotes the idea of restriction, e.g S&M; it's very tight across her body, maybe showing the idea of wanting to cause pain, which may come across in her lyrics of the album in which she is advertising. Her expression on her face is very strong and almost glaring at the audience due to her staring into the camera, this may show the idea of being very dominate and strong within the album, showing her ideology throughout this poster.

Target Audience Questionnaire feedback Journal

The two different questionnaires in which we gave out to both male and female audiences to see what different codes and conventions could be used within our video so that it would attract our target audience. From our feedback from our audience research we realised that the male audience mainly liked the typical 'indie' style within girls and the female celebrities in which they found attractive were mainly Pixie Lott or Rihanna, showing that to attract a male audience, the band would have to have this image. However, when looking at the female audience...

R Kelly DigiPack:

When looking at the DigiPack of R Kelly the codes and conventions of the design shows that it is representing an R 'n' B genre of music. This is shown due to the Urban images in which are added to the cover of the DigiPack, the images are in sepia image showing that they aren't bright and colourful as other genres such as pop. The images are also seen as him coming over as quite agressive by the way in which he is posing and appearing within the photographs, this also connotes the idea of power, traditionally found within rap or R 'n' B music genre. The lighting in the photographs are also very dark with could connote mystery or even danger, which again is normally issociated with R 'n' B music, showing that this digiPack relates very well with its chosen genre.

The colours used within the Pack allow it to stand out and be eye catching to the audience, these colours also connote the idea of danger, which is targetted to the attention of the target audience for this artist. The continuous use of printing the 'R' over the cover hows who the artist is being advertised on the different sides of the DigiPack so they are able to know how the artist is in which is contained in the Pack.

Introduction to a DigiPak

A digipak is similar to a CD case, but made mainly out of cardboard instead of plastic. There is an image referencing the artists on the front, usually with their name and the album title. There is a track list on the back and also distribution/production information, along with copyright information in small print. There is a slip inside which always contains song names and exactly who made them, along with some images. There are sometimes lyrics in these slips and also occasionally thank you messages. The digipak also has to be recognizably similar to the artist it belongs to i.e. have the same 'theme.' There is also a spine which contains usually only text, which says the artist's name, album name, and the record label.

The record label might choose one of these rather than a regular CD case because it's economically cheaper; they are also good for promo copies.

It benefits the consumer as it makes you feel like you're getting something extra.

Sunday 9 October 2011

Reference of relationship between lyrics and visual.

What does 'Scandalous' actually mean?
1.Causing general public outrage by a perceived offense against morality or law: "a series of scandalous liaisons".

2.(of a state of affairs) Disgracefully bad, typically as a result of someone's negligence or irresponsibility

When reading these definitions of the song title, I was thinking maybe referencing these actions in the music video.

Production Journal

Our group decided to have a talk about new ideas and ways we could make our music video ideas better after sharing our ideas with the class. We liked the idea of a chase scene within the music video where the video represents the idea of the guys having control over the girls and trying to find them, however, on the last verse of the video, the audience are shown that there is a twist and the women are actually chasing them. We don't want this to be confusing though so we are going to make that story as basic as possible.

Different scenes:
- Street (chase)
- Car (singing and driving)
- Plain backdrop (costume change)

We want to be able to film as much footage as possible within different locations that match the songs lyrics and the groups ideology so that the video doesn't get boring. We also want to include many different shots within the music video that link to the song and Goodwin's Theory; including ideas of:

- Slow motion of a rose petal dropping into a puddle at the beginning to represent the group name 'Studded Roses', maybe the hand it falls from is wearing a thick studdied one.

- One of the band members creating a notion of looking, by going to step on the camera in the heels, and then the camera goes fuzzy, then the song begins with the upbeat music.

Thursday 6 October 2011

Feedback from class.

- We may need to incorporate elements of performance within the video.
- Our idea of 'The Chase' is unlikely to last 3 minutes and it may get boring after a while.
- We should be cautious of 'The Chase' idea because it may get confusing after a while, as to who is chasing who.
- Where is the video going to be shot?
- When doing our storyboard we need to plan it out properly as to which shots will follow what
- We need to be careful that our music video does not get boring or confusing because there is only one sequence.
- There needs to be costume changes within the video, (which is essential for a girl band), the fact that there is only one sequence may make costume change difficult. Therefore, we need to consider our sequence.
- Possibly a performance in a dark, underground club scenario?
- May need to use a street near our school (due to us wanting to film the video at night and because of the lighting.
- Overall, our class liked 'The Chase' idea and the complex narrative but there needs to be more to it.

General Feedback for all:
-Need to shoot a lot of material
-Has to be a lot of variety
-There needs to be a lot of cuts to make it pacy for the audience
-Need to shoot at least three times at three different angles.

Moodboard

Within our group we made a moodboard of our ideas of the music video ideas, this included pictures of settings, similar artists, image of group, type of music and lyrics.

Monday 3 October 2011

Production Journal

In this weeks lessons we have focused on the development and ideas of our music video. We created our moodboard for our chosen genre, we started also looking at rock pop types of music videos instead of funky pop as that was the 'edge' of our music video. We have decided to go for a more rough, edgy and dark pop type of video; artists in which related to this type of video was Rihanna due to her ideology.

Sunday 2 October 2011

Researching videos that give ideas for our song choice.

When watching this music video, I really liked the concept of what kind of shots and backdrops the video included. I also found the dark make-up(dramatic)and the quick camera shot changes an idea to think about with our music video.

Our Song Choice:

Research into brief genre

When starting to think of ways in which I could research our chosen brief, I decided to reearch different music videos in which fit with our genre. When reading through the brief, I noticed that the interests of the group in which we are meant to be making the music video for was a group called, 'The Spice Girls', due to this I decided to look at one of 'The Spice Girls' music videos to see how and where they included aspects of Andrew Goodwin's theory.

Genre Characteristics:

-Bright colours - indicating pop music.
-The video is quite fun and giving the impression of just wanting a good time - relating to typical pop music.
-Camera follows the movement of the singers in the band - showing the fun, out of control way.
-Dancing in the video - showing fun pop genre.

Relationship between lyrics and visuals:
-When viewing the music video of this song, I feel that the realtionship between lyrics and visuals in this video is quite weak. Some of the singers occasionally point what they are singing but that's mainly it.

Relationship between music and visuals:
-The relationship between music and visuals also seems very weak within the video, when the beat changes in the song, the group just move to a different scene in the background.

Influence of record label and use of close-ups:
-The close ups used in this video are mainly of the singers faces as they are singing the lyrics, this may have been done to show their expressions in they faces closer, showing that are all happy and having fun.

References to the notion of looking/voyeurism:
-The whole music video is shot through point-of-view to the audience, making the audience feel as if they are part of the video; putting the audience in the position of the group singing to the audience, making it more personal to the audience.

Intertextual references:
-When watching the music video the other intertextual reference I could find was when the band name came up at the beginning of the video and when the location came up after it.

Production Journal

During this week we started talking about ideas for your music video. We decided to talk about all our different thoughts and feelings in the group to see what ones we were more for as an overall idea. One idea of a story line to the song in which came up in conversation was the idea of a group of girls showing their ex-boyfriends that they are better than them.
