About the digipack...

As I began to create my digipack, I brainstormed some words and environments that linked to the idea of being 'scandalous', when doing this crime was something I personally felt could link in really well. I wanted to think about adding a background that could represent this to the audience, leading to the crime scene tape. Next, I started thinking about the different codes and conventions as well as the elements that needed to be added such as the logo of the group, the tracklist, images of group, album title and disc design, not forgetting the logos of 'compact disc, DVD rom and Song BMG'.

When it came to thinking about colours in which I could use in the design, I decided that red and black would be the main colour scheme as when we were making the music video we decided that the members of the band would be wearing black and red the most as it is a connotation of danger, linking to the idea of being different which leads back to the ideology. Photographs of the band members was shown all across the digipack so that there would be more establishment to the new created group. 

Digipack Ideas

These are two of my designs in which I have thought of when creating a cover and an inner cover for the digipack of this girl band. For the front cover, I felt that the whole band needed to be shown on the front cover as this 'new band' needed to be shown so that the target audience would be able to see and understand what the groups ideology is. The logo needs to also be included with the typography and rose images; remembering to include the title of the album and the song tracks on the back.

On the inner cover I also liked the idea of having a close up of each of the band members faces (wearing edgy make up), along with the idea of separating each image with crime scene tape, being a connotation of being scandalous.

R Kelly DigiPack:

When looking at the DigiPack of R Kelly the codes and conventions of the design shows that it is representing an R 'n' B genre of music. This is shown due to the Urban images in which are added to the cover of the DigiPack, the images are in sepia image showing that they aren't bright and colourful as other genres such as pop. The images are also seen as him coming over as quite agressive by the way in which he is posing and appearing within the photographs, this also connotes the idea of power, traditionally found within rap or R 'n' B music genre. The lighting in the photographs are also very dark with could connote mystery or even danger, which again is normally issociated with R 'n' B music, showing that this digiPack relates very well with its chosen genre.

The colours used within the Pack allow it to stand out and be eye catching to the audience, these colours also connote the idea of danger, which is targetted to the attention of the target audience for this artist. The continuous use of printing the 'R' over the cover hows who the artist is being advertised on the different sides of the DigiPack so they are able to know how the artist is in which is contained in the Pack.

Introduction to a DigiPak

A digipak is similar to a CD case, but made mainly out of cardboard instead of plastic. There is an image referencing the artists on the front, usually with their name and the album title. There is a track list on the back and also distribution/production information, along with copyright information in small print. There is a slip inside which always contains song names and exactly who made them, along with some images. There are sometimes lyrics in these slips and also occasionally thank you messages. The digipak also has to be recognizably similar to the artist it belongs to i.e. have the same 'theme.' There is also a spine which contains usually only text, which says the artist's name, album name, and the record label.

The record label might choose one of these rather than a regular CD case because it's economically cheaper; they are also good for promo copies.

It benefits the consumer as it makes you feel like you're getting something extra.
